Joseph was born April 26, 1931 in Muscatine County, IA, the son of Henry and Laura Lanaghan Carlin. Joe married Joyce E. Baker on February 23, 1957 in Moline.
He attended St. Joseph High School in Rock Island for three years and was in the first class to graduate from Alleman Catholic High School in 1950. Following high school he attended St. Ambrose College for one semester, and he then served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War in Japan as a Sgt. 1st Class and Section Chief of six Howitzer Sections. He returned to college in 1956 and graduated from St. Ambrose in 1960 with a degree in Engineering Physics.
Following graduation he accepted employment as a systems engineer at Eagle Signal Company in its Traffic Controls Division. He was appointed Manager of Systems Engineering, then National Sales and Marketing Manager of Eagle Signal’s Industrial Controls Division.
In 1977, with the assistance of his wife Joyce, he founded Carlin Automation, Inc., a manufacturer’s representative firm specializing in sales and service of industrial instruments and controls.
Joe was a member of St. Pius X Church where he was a former Parish Council member and lector. He also served as a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Father Bader Assembly, and Rotary Club, Rock Island. He volunteered for the American Cancer Society and chaired the yearly fundraiser. Joe had a love of learning and a passion for travel. He enjoyed attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sports events and activities.
Joe was 100 percent Irish, with a fun-loving spirit and a twinkle in his eye. He was an eternal optimist who believed without a shadow of a doubt in the goodness of others.
Thank you, Dad and Papa Joe, for your unconditional love, for your patience and wisdom, and for your gentleness and compassion. To you, the two most important things were Faith and Family.
