Biography


John R. Carton, 85, of Moline, died Friday, June 4, 2010 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.

Funeral Mass will be 10:00am, Monday June 7 at Sacred Heart Church, Moline. Visitation will be 4-7pm, Sunday at Rafferty Funeral Home, 2111-1st Street A, Moline where a Catholic Order of Forester Rosary will be recited at 3:30pm. Entombment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, East Moline with military honors conducted by American Legion Post 246, Moline. Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Church or Alleman High School.

John was born to Adiel and Augusta Carton on January 18, 1925 in Moline, IL. He married Irene Kuberski on September 11, 1948.

While growing up, John helped his mother by working at Carton’s Grocery, Moline, the family business. He was a WWII veteran, having served in the Army in the European Theatre for 2 1/2 years and received a ribbon with 5 Campaign Clusters and a Bronze Star. In 1948 he graduated from St. Ambrose College with a Business Administration degree. He was employed by the former Montgomery Elevator Company for 40 years, retiring December 31, 1989.

John was an active member of Sacred Heart Church, Moline for over 80 years. He was a past member and Director of the National Association of Accountants, past member of the Audit Committee of United Way, member and Past Treasurer of Elevator Employees Credit Union, Director and Past President of the Catholic Credit Union, Past Chief Ranger of Catholic Order of Foresters Sacred Heart Court #1691and Past President of Associated Courts of Western Illinois of Catholic Order of Foresters, Past President of Catholic Social Services of Rock Island County, past member of Alleman School Board, past member of the Franciscan Health Systems Board of Trustees, member of American Legion Post 246 and member of Center for Belgian Culture.

John enjoyed spending time with his family, dining, travelling, attending his grandchildren’s sports events and following their career paths. He was also an avid Cubs and Notre Dame fan.

John is survived by his loving wife, Irene of 61 years; children, Teresa “Terry” (Bryan) Hawkins, Moline, Pat (Bob) Retzl, Bettendorf, Mary (Mike) Bureau, Perrysburg, OH, Paul (Anne) Carton, Moline, Joan (Dave) Heaton, Moline and Bill (Tracy) Carton, Kansas City, MO; 14 grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren and 3 step great grandchildren; brother, Robert Carton, Rock Island and sister, Ann Brodell, Moline, plus many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Hilda and Sister Mary Antonia and brothers, Rt. Rev. Msgr. George A. Carton and Joseph Carton.

A special “Thank you” to the staff at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House and many care givers who provided him with “gentle care”, compassion and comfort.
